Pat Shannon

These, Shannon

These, 2005, wood tables, dim. var.

Shannon’s current sculpture demonstrates a shift in the artist’s focus from one of making, to one of intervening. Existing objects are used “as is”, without change to their basic structure. Instead, they are enlisted as vehicles for a chosen symbolic action. Her recent installation, “Unbecoming”, employed acts of erasure. The workmanship was centered on meticulous hand-stripping and sanding to remove the surfaces from a collection of used furniture. She allowed the visual vocabulary to be strictly defined by the process and in this sense the work returns to a dialogue with minimalist language. Ultimately, the action undertaken is cause for a subtle transition in the furniture’s existence. It is this transition that Shannon presents as a point of entry for the viewer.
