Marilu Swett: It Makes Sense

For her show It Makes Sense, Marilu Swett presents a body of work that probes and plays with the complexity of our sensate lives. Swett draws and collages in overlapped layers, casts in rubber, bronze and plastic, and builds in mixed media to suggest multiple relationships between our senses and our experience of a work of art. Drawings inflate and glow, bulbs drip, and forms from biology and the mechanical realm bear allusions to brain organization and our somatic selves.

Swett intends her work to be interpreted in more than one direction, and it has been called by critics “evocative”, “almost recognizable but mysteriously capricious”, and  “endearingly awkward”. Cate McQuaid said of her work:

“Swett takes forms so purely functional it seems they never dreamed of beauty, then deftly raises them into the realm of metaphor… it’s like stepping through the wardrobe and finding oneself in Narnia. For us, it’s the rich melding of the mundane and the magical.”

-the Boston Globe

Marilu Swett lives and works in Jamaica Plain, MA. She has exhibited widely in the U.S. and has work in several corporate collections. She currently teaches at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA.
